Professional Teacher Education 2026

The aim of the Sociology of Education course (6 ECTS) is to deepen your understanding of the societal contexts of education and learning. After completing the course, you will be able to recognise the many ways in which societal structures and systems, as well as political steering and legislation, influence teachers’ work and students’ learning.

You will develop the ability to apply concepts from sociology of education to examine these issues and to reflect on your own possibilities to influence societal phenomena and changes visible in educational institutions in ways that meaningfully support students’ learning. The course is part of the basic studies in educational sciences.

The course includes the following learning tasks:
  • Assessment of initial level and setting personal learning goals (1 cr)
  • Fundamentals of sociology of education and their application (1 cr)
  • Education policy steering mechanisms and their significance (1 cr)
  • Your role as a teacher as a societal actor (1 cr)
  • Teacher identity and agency as part of educational structures (1.5 cr)
  • Final reflection (0.5 cr)
